Our teams are built on the strength and dedication of our coaches, and we truly appreciate you taking the time to complete this form. Your responses will help us place coaches where they are best suited and ensure we are able to support all of our teams for the upcoming season.

 


 

Halifax Hurricanes - Coaches Guide

 

Coaching Requirements from Lacrosse Nova Scotia:

Every Head Coach / Assistant Coach / Facilitator must:

  • Have a valid Coach NCCP#
  • Have a proof of Background check in previous 3 years (if 18 years of age and over)
  • Complete a Coach Certification course (3hr classroom and 1.5hr on-floor/on-field)
    • U11, U13, U15: will need only Community Development

    • U17 and Junior: will need Competition Introduction

  • Complete SafeSport, Making Headway in Sport, and Emergency Action Plan (EAP) e-modules

*Helpers (those under 16 years of age) must complete SafeSport e-module and can only help at practice(s), not on the bench

Please note that all new coaches, in all divisions, only need Community Development this year. If needed, coaches will progress through the certification program and complete Competition Introduction

RAMP Overview

RAMP is the official sports management platform used by all clubs and leagues within Lacrosse Nova Scotia

What You Need to Know:

  • Your team will be set up in RAMP. The roster will be loaded once teams have been determined. 

  • Game (MMLL) and practice (Hurricanes) schedules automatically populate.

  • Coaches and players must use the app to set availability for each game and practice.
    We recommend you sync the schedule with your personal calendar.

Practices and Games

You play an important role before, during, and after practices and games.

Responsibilities:

  • A certified coach needs to be on the floor before any players. Players are required to wear helmets at all times when on the floor for shoot around, practices, and games. 
  • Ensure the 2 Deep Policy is followed in all dressing rooms.
  • Confirm player availability and arrange affiliate players if necessary (MMLL affiliation rules - regulation 6
  • Enforce any suspensions (you’ll receive notifications).
  • Assist with any injuries and follow up if needed.

If you are in need of assistance throughout the season, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. If you are need of a fill in coach for a practice or game, please reach out as early as possible to other Hurricanes coaches to help out, or to Mike so he is able to find a replacement  

 

Communication

Work with your coaching team and manager to plan for the season. Your manager will organize and host a team parent meeting early in the season. Be prepared to introduce all coaching staff and speak to season goals, expectations, and rules.

Each team receives one weekly practice. Communicate with your team manager if your team needs to trade or cancel a practice time.

Provided by the Club:

Bucket of balls, cones, locker room door sign, jerseys, practice pinnies, First aid kit, Player of the Game necklace. 

 

Team Budget & Fundraising

The club covers most seasonal costs. Teams are responsible for additional expenses, such as tournaments, team events, photographer, clothing/water bottles. 

Work with your team manager concerning any items that require extra funds.

STEPS TO BECOMING A COACH
 
STEP 1
Get Your NCCP Number
If you are a coach in another sport or discipline of lacrosse you can use your existing NCCP
 
STEP 2
Register for Coaching Clinic
Lacrosse Nova Scotia puts on NCCP clinics. Register through their Ramp registration system using the same login and password as your Hurricanes Ramp. Coaches must be 16 years of age at the time of the clinic.
 
STEP 3
Complete E-modules in the locker (NCCP)
Completion of the SafeSportMaking Headway in Sport, and Emergency Action Plan (APE) e-modules are mandatory for all bench personnel, preparing coaches and trainers to recognize and manage concussion risks and safety in sport.
 
STEP 4
Register with your Club
Coaches are required to register in Ramp each playing season. Please fill in your NCCP number and background checks. 
 
STEP 5
Complete Criminal Record Check
Bench personnel over the age of 18 must complete their screening requirements, including a criminal record check (CRC) and vulnerable sector check (VSS)
